A Virtual Tour
The five-acre island in the St. Lawrence River now known as Heart Island, on which Boldt Castle stands, is in the township of Alexandria Bay in Jefferson County, New york. The island was once called Hemlock Island and, before George Boldt owned it, was called Hart Island after the former owner, Elizur Kirke Hart.
Mr. Hart was not afraid to make things comfortable for himself or his friends, and so spent considerable time and money having the island cleared and graded nicely, giving the apperance of a palace grove.
An 80-room summer cottage was built on the island in 1822, but was removed in 1900 to make room for the new summer house, Boldt Castle.
Lots more information, and many more photos inside!
